Where is Bristol?

Bristol is 100 miles (160 km) west of London, 90 minutes by car or 2 hours by bus from Heathrow airport. Have a look at the map.  You can also have a look at the Google Street Map.  Enter 44 Pembroke Road, BS8 in the box.

How do I get there?

From Heathrow or Gatwick, an easy - and certainly the cheapest - way to get to Bristol is by bus.
From Bristol airport, you can take a public taxi. It takes 20 minutes and costs approximately £23.00.
We also offer a transfer service.  For more information, click here.

What about the courses?

All courses are full-time. They include 28 lessons (21 hours in class) + daily homework + 2 hours' conversation club +4 hours' supervised self study (optional).
Your teacher will interview you on a regular basis to check that everything is going well. If you wish, you can also arrange additional private lessons

How much does it cost?

There is the cost of the course (tuition fees) and the cost of your accommodation.  There is also a registration fee and an accommodation placement fee. For details, please click here.
Of course, don’t forget your pocket money. We suggest £60.00 a week if you are staying in a homestay or £90.00 if you are in self-catering accommodation. Of course if you like shopping, bring more!

Which exams can I take?

The most popular exams are the IELTS and Cambridge exams. There are also some other exams which you can prepare for during the supervised self-study periods.  Please click here for more information.

How do I enrol?

Have a look at the enrolment procedure, then complete the enrolment form on line and send it to the school together with your deposit of £200.00. If you would like one of our local agents to help you, just let us know and we will put you in touch with them.

What if I cancel?

If you cancel your booking before your course starts, your £200.00 deposit is non-refundable.
If you stop your course early, the school will refund your tuition fees less 30% provided you give two full weeks’ notice. Click here for full information.

Can I take a holiday during my course?

You can take a holiday if you are enrolled on a course of 20 weeks or more and if you have been in the school for at least10 weeks. Only one holiday is permitted every 12 weeks. If you want to take a holiday you must give us two full weeks’ notice. It is not possible to refund tuition fees, however, the holiday period can be added to the end of your course, if this is convenient with the school.  For full information, please click here.

Is there anything I should know before I go?

We give an arrival information sheet to all students who are enrolled in the school. This will give you lots of useful information.

What’s so special about Bristol?

Bristol is a lively university city and the cultural centre of the West of England. It is famous for its theatres, nightlife and shopping and it is much loved by English people. However, it remains quite undiscovered by foreigners. Consequently, there are very few language schools in our city so it is much easier for our students to mix with English people.

Bristol is also a wealthy city with low unemployment, so it is not difficult for our students to find part-time work.

Bristol airport has cheap flights to 35+ different destinations. As well as making it easy to get here, it is a big attraction for students who would like to visit other European cities.

Have a look at some photos and the Bristol video.

Why choose ELC Bristol?

Established in1969, ELC Bristol is a family-run school, with experienced staff and teachers who really will do everything they can to take care of you. This is why the school is often full, even in winter.  Please click here for more reasons.

Where will I stay?

We can arrange your accommodation, generally within walking distance of the school.
We offer homestay with half board or student houses or flats where you cook for yourself. During the summer, you can also stay in the University Residence (self-catering).
Of course, if you wish, you can make your own arrangements.  Click here for more information.

Do I have to pay extra for books?

No, you don’t. The cost of a course book and materials is included in the registration fee. (One free course book every 12 weeks).

How about the other students?

There is an average of 185 students in the school from more than 35 different countries. The average age of the students is 23. Last year, 18% of our students were over 30. The school has a ‘university type’ atmosphere. It is not a business centre.
We do not accept groups, juniors or part-time students and this helps to ensure the school’s unique atmosphere.

How do I pay?

You can pay by bank transfer, credit card, bank draft, Sterling travellers’ cheques or in cash.  See here for details.

What about insurance?

We recommend you take out travel and medical insurance, insurance to cover fees in case of cancellation and loss of personal possessions such as lap tops, cameras and mobile phones. A reputable company offering such insurance is Gibbs Denley.

Do I need a visa?

Countries fall into 3 categories:

EEA - includes European Union countries +  Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and students from Leichtenstein.  Students from these countries do not need a visa.

Non-Visa Nationals - includes countries such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Israel, etc.     Students from these countries can get a Student Visitor Visa on arrival or  before they come.  Alternatively, if they want to come for more than 6 months, they can apply, in advance, for a General Student Visa.

Visa Nationals - includes countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Russia, Ukraine, China, Thailand, Turkey and the Middle Eastern countries.   These students must get a visa before they leave home.  They can apply for a Student Visitor Visa if they want to come for less than 6 months or a General Student Visa if they want to come for more than 6 months.
